Looks like there will be some rain coming to the Cape this week – why not take in some art when you’re not at the beach?

There’s lots to see at the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable, and if you’re on the Cape full-time or just for the summer, the Center offers some great classes for all ages.

This juried exhibit, which runs until August 14, 2026, has some great work from artist on the Cape and beyond, and I’m honored to be included.

As a newly minted juried member of the Cape Cod Art Center, I’m glad they chose this piece to include in their juried summer nationals exhibit. I went through the review process earlier this spring and will post about that sometime soon.

“May Altar” included in the Umbrella Arts Student Show, A Moment of Reflection, now through August 30, 2026

I owe so much to the Umbrella Arts Center in Concord, Massachusetts, for the opportunities they’ve provided to me and countless other artists, giving us a chance to pursue art instruction from an incredibly gifted group of instructors whose work inspires us every day.

I’ve studied under Kat O’Connor on and off since 2017, when I took my first watercolor class at the Umbrella thinking it might help me help Walt expand his art to include painting. It turned out that I was the one who expanded my art horizon under Kat’s steady guidance. Kat has mentored a devoted group of artists whose affiliation with her is measured not just in years, but decades, and I am honored to be among them and learn from them.

Each summer Umbrella Arts offer students a chance to share classwork completed during the past year, and I decided to submit my piece, “May Altar,” which is part of a series of paintings I did that were inspired by Mary and the Rosary. The Umbrella Arts Center is at 40 Stow Street in Concord, Massachusetts. It’s right in the heart of Concord (near the Library) and there is lots to do and see nearby.

The Great Brush Off auction to benefit the Cahoon Museum of American art is now open for viewing, and you find two works of mine included:

The Silent auction opens on June 27 at 9am and there’s an open house and artists reception that day, too. There’s a Live Auction Party on July 11th that requires a ticket.

The Cahoon Museum of American Art is a gem in Cotuit, MA, that features local artists (there’s always work on display by Ralph and Martha Cahoon) as well as great American artisans and their place in history.

The current show features Nantucket Baskets (haven’t seen it yet) but the Tiffany’s Gardens in Glass show that just closed was spectacular – I visited it three times.

I’m especially proud to be included in this New England Watercolor Society exhibition in this beautiful gallery space. Once again, I expected one of my more traditional paintings to make the cut on this show, and they surprised me by choosing this contemporary work. My hope is that the fuller context of this painting comes through – while much of my work has a whimsical quality to it, there are deeper messages in to be found for those who care to look. But the colors and shapes hold their own, I think.

“A State of Perpetual Surprise” to appear in the Rhode Island Watercolor Society’s Juried Simply Watercolor Show, November 15-December 12, 2025

I’m certainly glad the wonderful people at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society seem to understand my art, as evidenced by their acceptance of this whimsical piece. Sometimes I feel like my work is a bit of comic relief in an angsty and serious time and that’s perfectly fine with me – but the tiny figure in the window in this piece represents something important to me. I can’t presume to know what it might evoke in the viewer, but comments are encouraged.

An Honorable Mention for “Inception” from the Sandwich Arts Alliance

The June Kershaw Open Exhibit includes some extraordinary works in a variety of media, so I’m especially pleased that we earned an honorable mention in the watercolor category. As party of this juried show of 50 works selected from hundreds of entries, judge Hillary Osborn called this Inception “very innovative” – it does stray from traditional watercolor and so I’m particularly glad to be to show it and be recognized.

“Inception” accepted to the Sandwich Arts Alliance’s June Kershaw Open Juried Exhibition July 22-August 30, 2025

I’m so pleased to have a chance to share this piece, which sprang from my imagination during a long winter emerging from COVID.

The Sandwich Arts Alliance is a wonderful creative resource for artists and writers on Cape Cod. It’s home is in the old Sandwich, Massachusetts, Town Hall, where you can view exhibits, take classes and browse their shop that’s full of books, cards, images and lots of original art.

The show opens on July 22 – the gallery reception is on July 31 from 5:30-7:30pm. The SAA is open Tuesday – Saturday 11 – 4.

We recently participated in the SAA’s Hydrangea Week art sale, spending a gorgeous July day in the shade sharing our work with people from near and far.
